Dave Mason, the celebrated guitarist, singer, and songwriter best known as a founding member of the influential 1960s rock band Traffic, has died at the age of 79.
A spokesperson confirmed that Mason passed away on Sunday, April 19, 2026, at his home in Gardnerville, Nevada.
“Dave Mason lived a remarkable life devoted to the music and the people he loved,” the statement read, honoring a career that spanned decades and left a lasting mark on rock history.
Mason rose to prominence as a founding member of Traffic, contributing to the band’s distinctive blend of rock, jazz, and psychedelia.
Beyond his work with the group, he built a respected solo career and collaborated with some of the biggest names in music, including Jimi Hendrix, Paul McCartney, and The Rolling Stones.
Among his most enduring contributions is the song “Feelin’ Alright?,” later popularized by Joe Cocker in 1969. Mason also found solo success with hits like
“We Just Disagree,” a 1977 ballad that remains a staple of classic rock radio.
In recent years, Mason faced ongoing health challenges. In 2024, he postponed a tour after doctors discovered a serious heart condition during a routine checkup. By 2025, he had canceled all scheduled performances as he focused on recovery.

“Recovery is a long road. My love for you all runs deep,” Mason shared with fans on Instagram at the time.
Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Traffic, Mason’s legacy is defined by his versatility, collaborations, and timeless songwriting. His music continues to resonate with generations of listeners, ensuring his influence will endure.
