Brendon’s family shared the news in a statement posted on his official Instagram page on Friday, March 20.
“We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon. He passed in his sleep of natural causes,” the statement read.
The family also reflected on his life beyond acting.
“Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor, and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years, Nicky has found his passion in painting and art,” they said. “Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends, and fans. He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create.”

The statement added that those close to him saw his art as a true reflection of who he was. It also acknowledged that Brendon had faced personal struggles but was receiving treatment and remained hopeful about the future.
“Our family asks for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart,” the statement concluded.
Nicholas Brendon’s Career Highlights
Brendon rose to fame playing Xander Harris on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ran for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003. He starred alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar, Alyson Hannigan, Charisma Carpenter, and David Boreanaz.

He also appeared in films including Psycho Beach Party, Unholy, and Coherence. His television credits included Kitchen Confidential and Criminal Minds, where he played the recurring role of Kevin Lynch.
In the years following Buffy, Brendon spoke publicly about his struggles with depression, as well as alcohol and substance addiction.
He entered rehab multiple times and faced legal issues, including arrests related to domestic violence charges and prescription fraud.
