HBO’s most famous series, The House of the Dragon’s Third season, ends this Sunday. last finale episode of season 3 aired this Sunday. The season 3 finale delivered a dramatic conclusion filled with major battles, shocking deaths, unexpected reunions, and several decisions that could have major consequences for the future of the Targaryen civil war.
Rhaenyra Targaryen’s reaction to the news that Aegon II has survived changes the course of the conflict. Driven increasingly by emotion, she moves toward the First Battle of Tumbleton while making several controversial decisions along the way, including the execution of the High Septon.
The episode also brings major developments for figures including Ormund Hightower and Roddy the Ruin, while Ulf the White creates further chaos by attacking forces on both sides.
Despite the crowded finale, several important characters were noticeably absent. Their disappearances may be temporary, however, with their stories potentially continuing in Season 4.
4 Major House of the Dragon Characters Who weren’t in the Finale
Tyland Lannister
Tyland Lannister has also spent considerable time alongside Aegon, making his absence from the finale noticeable. After surviving the Battle of the Gullet, Tyland eventually reunites with Aegon and Larys at Rook’s Rest. He later attempts to persuade Aegon to travel toward Lannisport for safety.
The plan never materializes. Tyland is last seen accompanying Aegon before the king reunites with Sunfyre and confronts the Mooton soldiers. When Aegon later travels to Harrenhal to deal with Aemond, Tyland is no longer beside him.
That does not necessarily mean his storyline is finished. Quite the opposite: Tyland has an important role to play in the events of Fire & Blood, remaining close to the crown and becoming significant to the political future of Westeros. His absence from the finale could therefore be setting up a larger storyline for Season 4.
Larys Strong
Matthew Needham’s Larys Strong has spent much of Season 3 accompanying Aegon as the king attempts to survive after losing control of King’s Landing. In the penultimate episode, Larys chooses to leave Aegon’s side after learning that Mooton forces are nearby. Knowing that he cannot contribute much in a confrontation, he decides that remaining with Aegon could put them both at greater risk.
That decision explains why Larys does not appear during the Season 3 finale.
His future is particularly interesting because the show has already diverged from the events of Fire & Blood. In the book, Larys remains connected to King’s Landing after helping Aegon escape. With Rhaenyra now controlling the capital, returning there could be extremely dangerous for him. Harrenhal also seems unlikely to provide Larys with a comfortable home.
Another possibility is that the character could eventually leave Westeros and travel across the Narrow Sea. If the series chooses that route, Larys may have a much smaller presence in Season 4, or he could return to King’s Landing when the story requires him.
Rhaena Targaryen
Rhaena’s storyline took a dramatic turn during Season 3 after the series incorporated elements traditionally associated with Nettles from Fire & Blood into her character.
After becoming the rider of Sheepstealer, Rhaena’s journey eventually brings her back toward King’s Landing after Rhaenyra discovers what she has been doing. Her sister Baela appears briefly during the Season 3 finale, but Rhaena herself is missing.
That absence makes sense following everything she has experienced. Rhaena has endured enormous pressure throughout the season, and the show may be allowing her character some time away from the central conflict. Her future is especially interesting because her Sheepstealer storyline has now largely reached its conclusion. That could allow the writers to explore another part of Rhaena’s story from Fire & Blood.
One major question for Season 4 is whether the series will introduce Morning, Rhaena’s future dragon in the source material. Fans of the book have been waiting to see whether the show will eventually bring that part of her story to life.
Jeyne Arryn
Jeyne Arryn may not have had as much screen time as some of the major players in the Dance, but her role in the story remains important. Amanda Collin’s character was tasked with protecting Rhaena in the Vale. Her situation changed dramatically after news of the Battle of the Gullet reached her.
Her final appearance in Season 3 comes when Daemon Targaryen arrives in the Vale and demands information about his daughter. With Rhaena now back in King’s Landing, it would be easy to assume that Jeyne’s involvement has come to an end. However, the source material suggests otherwise.
In Fire & Blood, Jeyne remains an important supporter of Rhaenyra and continues to provide assistance to her cause. Unless the television adaptation takes a significantly different direction, there is still plenty of room for Jeyne to return in Season 4.
What These Absences Could Mean for Season 4?
The Season 3 finale may have left several characters off-screen, but that does not necessarily mean their stories have been abandoned. Larys could once again become involved in the political struggles surrounding King’s Landing. Tyland’s loyalty to the crown could place him at the center of major developments. Rhaena may finally receive a storyline focused on her future rather than Sheepstealer, while Jeyne Arryn could continue supporting Rhaenyra from the Vale.
With the Dance of the Dragons far from over, Season 4 has plenty of unresolved storylines to revisit.
