Lauren Chapin Dies: Lauren Chapin, best known for her role as Kathy “Kitten” Anderson on the beloved television series Father Knows Best, has died at 80.
Son Confirms Lauren Chapin’s Death.
Chapin’s son, Matthew Chapin, announced his mother’s passing in a Facebook post on February 24. He revealed that she died after a long battle with cancer.
“After a long, hard-fought battle over the past five years, the time has come,” he wrote. “My mother, Lauren Chapin, passed away from her battle with cancer tonight.”
He added, “I’m at a complete loss for words right now. Please keep my sister and family in your thoughts and prayers as we go through this incredibly tough time.”
Lauren Chapin’s Career on Father Knows Best.
Lauren Chapin starred on Father Knows Best from 1954 to 1960. The show aired on both CBS and NBC during its run and remained popular in syndication for many years. Two television reunion specials also aired in 1977.

Chapin was cast as Kathy Anderson in part because she resembled Robert Young’s real-life daughter Kathy. Young, who played the family patriarch on the series, had four daughters, and Chapin closely resembled one of them.
A Life Marked by Struggles
Despite her success as a child star, Chapin’s personal life was deeply troubled. She later alleged that her mother struggled with alcoholism and that her father sexually abused her. She also revealed that she attempted suicide as a child and described herself as having a “manic depressive personality.”
The Hollywood Reporter noted that during a 1989 appearance on Live! With Regis and Kathie Lee, Chapin spoke openly about her hardships.
“I didn’t understand how God could let me suffer,” she said.
She added, “It was very difficult to understand how Kathy Anderson could be loved and protected, and Lauren Chapin lived a whole different kind of life.”
Legal Battles, Addiction, and Recovery
After Father Knows Best ended, Chapin sued her mother to gain access to the money she earned during the show. She later dropped out of high school, married young, and divorced at the age of 18.
A subsequent marriage ended in annulment. Chapin also alleged that during another relationship, her partner forced her into prostitution and introduced her to heroin. She lived that life for seven years and endured eight miscarriages during that time.
Chapin became sober in 1970 and later shared her story in her 1989 book, Father Does Know Best.
