Behind Zohran Mamdani and Rama Duwaji’s Wedding Exclusive Photos: Zohran Mamdani and Rama Duwaji chose a uniquely New York way to get married: by hopping on the subway during rush hour.
Photographer Kara McCurdy, who documented their wedding day, still laughs about how surreal that moment feels now.
“It’s wild to imagine doing that today, there’s no way we could move through a train with how recognizable he is now,” she says, acknowledging how quickly Mamdani’s public profile has exploded as mayor-elect.
But back then, on a rainy February morning, the couple squeezed onto the crowded N-W line and later transferred to the 4 or 5 train.
Duwaji held a bouquet that Mamdani had bought for her just minutes earlier at a small Astoria flower shop. As McCurdy snapped photos in the middle of the morning commuter crush, something magical stood out. “We stepped onto this ridiculously packed train,”
She recalls.
I look over, and Rama is just staring at Zohran with full-on heart-eyes. It was like the two of them were in their own little world, even though the car was jam-packed.”

McCurdy first met Mamdani in 2019 at a party for Tiffany Cabán’s Queens District Attorney campaign. A few months later, she volunteered for his 2020 run for state assembly.
When the pandemic shut everything down, the Savannah College of Art and Design graduate offered help in a new way by shaping his visual presence online. With in-person campaigning impossible, she knew voters needed to at least see him.
“At that point in March 2020, we literally had one single photo,” she says with a laugh. “That one picture was being used for everythingflyers, press releases, media, all of it.”
So she began taking new photos for his Instagram, where he had only about 2,000 followers at the time. That number didn’t stay small for long. “People just love seeing him,” McCurdy says. “Once the photos started going up, the following never stopped growing
