His clever and often controversial songs included “Poisoning Pigeons in the Park,” “The Old Dope Peddler” (a play on “The Old Lamplighter”), “Be Prepared” (a satire of the Boy Scouts), and “The Vatican Rag,” in which the atheist composer poked fun at Catholic rituals.
