James Tolkan Dies: James Tolkan, known for his roles in Back to the Future and Top Gun, has died at the age of 94.

The news of James Tolkan’s passing was confirmed on Friday through official Instagram accounts of Industrial Light and Magic and Amblin, both of which were involved in the Back to the Future films.
“We were saddened to learn of the passing of the great James Tolkan, known best to us at ILM as Principal Gerald Strickland and U.S. Marshal James Strickland in the Back to the Future trilogy,” the statement read.
“Our thoughts are with his wife, Parmelee Welles, and all who knew him across his memorable life and career.”

His character, famously called Marty McFly, played by Michael J. Fox, a “slacker.
He also appeared as alternate versions of the character in the sequels, including Chief Marshal James Strickland in Back to the Future Part III.
In Top Gun, he portrayed Stinger, a commanding officer who delivers the line to Tom Cruise’s Maverick, “Your ego is writing checks that your body can’t cash,” before sending him to the Top Gun program.

James Tolkan was born in 1931 in Calumet, Michigan. he served in the U.S. Navy before attending Coe College and the University of Iowa.

He later moved to New York in the 1950s to study acting at the Actors Studio under Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg.
He made his screen debut in a 1960 episode of Naked City and appeared on Broadway in Wait Until Dark as the character Harry Roat, a role later played by Alan Arkin in the film adaptation.
